Large newspapers and television channels also have reporters stationed in major cities to provide coverage of the local news. However, the news carried by the television channels is very brief and they usually have more videos (basically recycle the content from the television news channels)

Till a few decades ago, newspapers were the only source of news. With advent of television and radio, people had access to additional news channels. However all these sources of news required a large investment to become as a result of which they were usually funded by big businesses houses and promoted their interests.

Compared to other media, the internet allowed even a small publisher to reach a worldwide audience, without much investment. They could published the news as they saw it and their opinion  of any topic without any editorial restriction. For a smaller publisher, it was unlikely that many people would read his or her views on a particular subject, so it was more like a diary or a debate.

However, if the news was about a large company or defamatory in nature, the publisher of the news  could be subject to legal action if the news was factually incorrect. So it was important for the publisher to verify the facts, especially if they could damage a business.
